“She had a dream…and she made it happen.”
I met Jane Lambert in London twenty years ago, when she was in her mid sixties and I was in my early thirties. Jane had recently retired from teaching and she told me she was going to do two things in retirement – create a new life for herself in France and find a French lover.
I thought she was bonkers, a crazy, colourful optimist with her head in the clouds. Leaving aside her age (I thought she was too old for adventure, how stupid was I?) Jane was confined to a wheelchair. As if that wasn’t enough, she didn’t speak French, she had hardly any money and the house she wanted to buy looked like a derelict shack. Thankfully I kept my ill informed opinions to myself.
I was so intrigued by Jane and her ambitious dreams that I stayed in touch. And Jane has proved me wrong, on every count. Over the past twenty years in France Jane has slowly built the life she always dreamed of. She turned the derelict shack into a comfortable home, she planted a beautiful garden that flourishes without any chemical help and, of course, she met her French lover.
Jane has been an inspiration to me, and, I suspect, to everyone who meets her. I feel privileged to be able to share a small part of her adventure with you.

Darling Deb, I am back in Oz and catching up on delicious strawberry posts! I have ordered the book and will OBVIOUSLY need it autographed when you get back. When you have a minute, there’s an unwritten novel or two in Nepal. Really looking forward to seeing you. Huge hugs to you both, Wendy

I spent two mornings “devouring” Dream Wheeler. What a wonderful story of an obviously very corageous woman. I felt all of Janes emotions as she struggled to come to terms with living in her derelict ‘dream’ home, and her on again, off again relationship with Rene. Beautiful story, well written and an absorbing read. Helen T
