Strawberries in the Desert

Story telling from Australia

Love in the Outback

Love in the Outback is due for publication at the end of this month, so I thought I’d better tell you about it. This is my own, deeply personal, ‘strawberry’ in the desert.

cover

I wrote Love in the Outback to try and make sense of the wondrous thing that’s happened over the past five years, how after decades of chasing the wrong men, endlessly repeating the same mistakes over and over again, I finally got it. I finally worked out that there’s a difference between love and romance. Of course, it didn’t happen overnight, and it didn’t happen without some very rocky moments when I came close to repeating the mistakes of the past – with disastrous consequences.

The journey has been a long one, and I wouldn’t have missed a moment of it. It took me from England to Australia, then into the depths of remote Australia, on a voyage of discovery that opened my eyes to the real beauty of this extraordinary world we live in. I learnt that love can turn up in the most unexpected places and that kindness and community matter more than money or status.

I learnt that life can surprise you, no matter how old you are.

Here’s what the publisher, Macmillan, says about it:

At forty-nine, Deb Hunt stopped dating. The men she loved didn’t love her back. When she found herself stalking her latest flame, Deb knew it was time to make changes. From her home in the UK, she applied for a job in Australia – as a PR assistant with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Deb packed up her home, said goodbye to everything that was familiar, and headed down under. There she encountered a land she never imagined and met a man unlike any other – a Royal Flying Doctor Service legend.

He was a deeply practical, reasonable, steady, conservative person – in other words, the polar opposite of Deb. He wanted a relationship. She wanted to flee.

This is the story of what happens when you finally ditch your life-long dreams of romance, only to discover that reality is not such a bad place after all.

This looks amazing Deb! I am an Australian ex-pat living in America and I can never get enough “aussie” literature. I will be trying to get my paws on this book as soon as possible!

Hi Deb. Will we be able to get it at Amazon for downloading soon? I can’t find anywhere to download it and I am living overseas so don’t have access to hard copy.

No luck, deb. I went through the steps and signed up with Macmillan but then n the end it said, “not deliverable to canada”. I’ve written to bookworld to see if their kobo ebook would work on ipad, but I am guessing I will have no luck there either. I will try again at a later date. Thanks for answering, deb.
