Strawberries in the Desert

Story telling from Australia

Until the next time

The holiday in Broken Hill is over and I’m left with the memory of Fiddlewood trees in flower. Each exquisite shock of scent from those tiny flowers could be traced from several streets away. I took it as a sign of hope that such trees could flower when water was so scarce.

Wherever I looked I saw beauty in Broken Hill.

I saw bougainvillea flowering in profusion…

I saw delicate pink flowers in a long abandoned back garden…

Even houses that had seen better days looked beautiful in the early morning sun…

And colour was never far away…

We all enjoyed being back.

So until the next time, thank you Broken Hill.

I worry so with you about the scarcity of water in Broken Hill and truly hope the situation can be rectified. I find it both inspiring and poignant to note how nature presses on, even under the most harsh and stressful conditions…

Your photos are lovely, Deb. Thank you for sharing them here. xoxo

Thanks Eliza, there’s something very special about Broken Hill, intangible yet deeply felt. That sky was incredible, like a bolt of fire from on high!

Oh Deb….gosh this made me feel deep yearning. Surprisingly deep. I think I will plan my own return visit some time this year. You can take the girl out of the town etc….
    Still waving from Nepal.

Hello Wendy, let me know when you plan to go back maybe we can join you for another magical creek bed BBQ – complete with Fawlty Towers reading! We tackled the first episode on the last visit. Such fun. Ann Evers is producing some stunning work for an exhibition later in the year, October I think?

As I look at the “still hanging around” snow patches, I sigh at the beauty you have provided us with….
