A Christmas Story

Twenty years ago, almost to this very day, I travelled with Django Zazou to northern France, heading for Jane Lambert’s bitterly cold house, which lacked any appreciable heating, had no carpets to cover the stone floors and precious little furniture. The conditions were shocking and hardly conducive to a Merry Christmas, but they did nothing to dampen Jane’s spirit. She had overcome what for most people would seem impossible odds to follow her dream and relocate to France, so in spite of the freezing temperatures, the leaking drains and the plagues of mice, Jane was determined to enjoy every minute of her French adventure. Which meant, of course, that we enjoyed it too.
