Strawberries in the Desert

Story telling from Australia

Back in The Hill

After a 12 hour drive from Sydney we’re back in Broken Hill, where the skies are promisingly grey and the wind is blowing. Could there be rain later? What a great Easter present that would be.

In the meantime, while we recover from the drive, I thought I’d share these pics taken beside the slow moving Bogan River at Nyngan, where we broke the journey.

‘Bogan’ in Australia is an ugly slang term for anyone you want to deride. That beautiful river reclaimed the word.

Even Maggie stopped to admire the view.

    Dear Deb.

Have a lovely time in Broken Hill. They need the rain there. All I had to do to make it rain, while we were there, was to wash the car. Seems to work every time for me. Here is a story for you. Funny now but not at the time. I was looking after 3 year old Noah yesterday, at my son’s home. Spent a minute or two in the bathroom. Then couldn’t find Noah anywhere. Timed myself methodically looking for for him but after 5 minutes I still could not find him. I heard a noise from the laundry but could not see anything there. I finally opened the lid of the top loading washing machine. There he was with a great big grin, bright blue eyes twinkling. He had 2 kittens in there with him. What a relief! Later her was wheeling his little pull along suit case, telling me he was going on holiday. I could hear a kitten crying. Very quickly I open the case to let the poor little thing out. You can’t take you eyes off this fun loving boy for a second. When his mother came home and told him to stay away from the washing machine her gave a very disarming smile saying. “I love you mummy, you are so pretty.” Just like his father, I don’t think the apple fell far from the tree there.

    Wishing you a Happy Easter.

    Thelma and Jack.
