Strawberries in the Desert

Story telling from Australia

Look what arrived in the post

SONY DSCFifteen precious author copies of Australian Farming Families arrived in the post yesterday and two and a half years of work were forgotten when I unpacked the box, lifted the lid and saw what was inside.

The cover is absolutely gorgeous (I hope you agree) and eight of those books will shortly be on their way to the families who so generously welcomed me into their homes and shared their stories with me. SONY DSC

I’ll be giving one to Clyde too, because without his support and encouragement I wouldn’t have finished the revisions on time.

When the deadline approached it was Clyde who kept the mugs of tea coming, Clyde who did all the chores and Clyde who agreed to cheese on toast and takeaway on more nights than I care to remember, so if anyone deserves a free copy he does.

Hmm…that only leaves six copies.

I’d better hand them over soon, really soon, or I’ll turn into the writer’s equivalent of Gollum and sit stroking My Prrrecious books all over Easter. SONY DSC

Thank you to all the families who agreed to be interviewed and to the team at Pan Macmillan who did such a fantastic job on this book, which is officially released on 1 May.

I’ll post more about the families I interviewed over the next couple of weeks, I promise, but right now I’m going to put the kettle on, make a cup of tea and enjoy the view.

Happy Easter!

Thanks Jeanette, hope you enjoy it! I’ve asked the Tasmanian Writers’ Centre if they’d like a visit and I’d love to come back to Tasmania to promote it, so if you know of anyone who would like a speaker do let them know, best wishes, Deb

Looks fantastic. Good luck with this book which will I’m sure be a classic in time to come and an invaluable source for historical and sociology students. Very proud of you.

Thanks Mary, I don’t pretend to hope it will become a classic because let’s face it, I’m not a farmer (!) but I do hope it will give people a bit of insight into what life is like for people who live and work on the land in Australia. I came away from each interview wishing I could be a farmer and knowing I would never have the strength, resilience or stamina.

Congratulations – if I was clever enough to write a book and it was published, I’d sit and cuddle one all day long!
